Amerikkalainen perheenäiti uppoutui niin syvälle tietokonepelin maailmaan, että unohti kolmevuotiaan tyttärensä kuumaan autoon kohtalokkain seurauksin. Vastaavat unohdukset vaativat kesän aikana Yhdysvalloissa ainakin 36 lapsen hengen.

English: this is the couple of weeks old news about a woman who forgot her child in a hot car while she palyed EQ. Obviously the child died.

Heh...well i have to comment this some...

This kind of news is one reason why I very rarely read Iltasanomat or other sort of "scandal" papers. They write a lot similar kind of "important" news, that they expect to shake their readers, while they are only making themselves laughable (at least in my eyes).

Of course it is sad for those children, who  their irresponsible parent forgot inside locked car in sunshine for hours while they were playing EQ or SWG, but world is full of sad stories none of them relating to mmorpg and they never get public. I really wonder what was the motivation to publish this particular piece of irrelevant information.

I wonder how many US children has died this year, because their parents forgot them to nasty places  and have gone to do something else than playing mmorpg, such as drinking beer, shopping in the mall, shoot some heroine, sniff cocaine  etc. etc. Number are probably bigger than 36. Not to mention due to illegal fire arms etc. Maybe Iltasanomat could list these all circumstances and publish top 40 list of them Smiley

Personally I think that any parent or adult responsible of a child who is capable to forget this child to a dangerous place for hours, because of a mmorpg, must lack something between his/hers left and right ear and the big mistake happened when the fertilization happened Smiley

Im 95% sure first time I saw this it was on CNN website. Iltalehti added SWG to the satanic list though. On that website, I got the impression that the child wasn't forgotten in a hot car, but he/she had gone there by him/herself to play and somehow got locked in... and the point was more like that woman wasnt worried about not knowing where her child was, not that she had half-intentionally left her child to die in hot car. Even one of their neighbours said that he had seen that child playing alone in that car many times before. So I bet this was a combination of neglect and bad luck.

But I bet we will never know the whole truth as this story sounds much more interesting when its written in Iltalehti-style.

Quote

Many more are left by accident in stores, at home or, in one 1987 case, in a car seat placed on top of the car; the mother drove two blocks before her 2-month-old fell off, injuring his collarbone. Although some of these mishaps are due to neglect or resentment, experts say that most are tragic blunders by otherwise responsible parents.

"These kinds of errors are made all the time, and for most of us we're just fortunate the consequences aren't so tragic," Braver said.

For years, psychologists and other neuroscientists have searched for common denominators in cases of serious human error. They have done laboratory experiments on distraction. They have had people keep detailed diaries of their memory lapses. And they have tried to re-create the precise circumstances and thinking (or lack thereof) at the time.

The evidence suggests that people make awful, life-changing mistakes for the same reasons they forget to pick up the milk: because they misjudge the reliability of their own memory; because they're highly distractible; and because they're generally unaware of how easily and completely they can become engrossed in pet projects or problems, absent to everything else.
